Generative AI in Music: How Algorithms Are Changing the Way Music Is Created

Generative AI in music refers to the use of artificial intelligence systems that can compose, arrange, and transform music with minimal human input. These systems rely on machine learning models trained on large collections of musical data, such as melodies, harmonies, rhythms, and timbres, enabling them to recognize patterns and generate new musical content. Rather than simply automating existing workflows, generative AI introduces new ways of thinking about creativity, collaboration, and authorship in music.

How Generative AI Creates Music

At the core of generative AI music tools are models such as neural networks, transformers, and diffusion-based systems. These models analyze vast amounts of audio files, MIDI data, or symbolic music representations to learn musical structures. Once trained, they can generate original melodies, chord progressions, beats, or even full compositions based on user inputs like genre, tempo, mood,…

Recruiting UK-based psychology educators

We're interested in the views of UK-based psychology educators who teach on BPS accredited programmes for a short survey about your "psychological literacy" practice. It takes no longer than 10 minutes to complete and will help us to understand the current state of psychology pedagogy in the UK. Please share!

War and violent conflict as a topic in teaching of psychology: What is there in the literature? What web-resources are there?

Hi everyone,

here I post the start for a collection of commented list of literature and web resources. Please share your favorite resources (together with a short comment on how you recommend using it).

In the following, some examples of what the literature offers on war and violent conflict as a topic in teaching of psychology are briefly reviewed to help initiate discussion and material collection in this forum

Relate current events to topics covered

Surveying students Huston and Michelle DiPietro (2007) document that students are irritated when teachers go on with class without mentioning the event. Teaching on the day something terrible happened, diverse spontaneous actions seemed welcome.

Gurstelle et al. (2004) as well as Nelson and Christie (1995) provide brief hints (usually one paragraph per issue) how current events/permanent threats of war/terrorism can be related to different domains in psychology programs such as: Biological bases of behavior, Consciousness,…

Workshop or training for online teaching

Are members interested in having a short workshop or training session around issues - technical or pedagogical - that would help support or develop our online teaching practices? We're looking for: a) people (whether ESPLAT members or not) who have skills and ideas to share and could contribute to the workshop, and b) ideas for the kinds of things the workshop could focus on. What kind of workshop would be most useful? Please tell us! We can use this discussion thread to gather ideas.

Yes this would be very helpful! Particularly at the moment where there seems to be a bit of a midterm slump and students are feeling a bit overwhelmed - I would be interested in learning about how others are dealing with this to ensure teaching is still being delivered as effectively as possible.

Research into Zoom teaching

Is anyone else interested in, or already busy with, research into Zoom teaching? I'm thinking here of any kind of research where you're collecting data about teaching through use of video-conferencing software. Some of us in Linköping are about to embark on some data collection where we'll record online problem-based learning groups, and we're interested in understanding more about how students manage group work in this setting. Anyone else considering research in this area? We could use this as a space to share ideas and discuss potential collaboration.

That would be really interesting to see how it works out, Michael. The trick is to find the time to plan the research so that it does not interrupt the teaching too much; thankfully recording Zoom meetings is quite straight-forward from a practical perspective (there is a 'record' button) but of course the time will be needed to analyse the data afterwards! Lets see if anyone else is doing any Zoom research. I've heard discussions about this on Twitter recently, so some other social interaction researchers are already getting started. Exciting!

Welcome to the discussion forum

This is short welcome message to introduce the new discussion forum for ESPLAT. This space is for members to initiate and contribute to discussions on topics of relevance to teaching and learning in psychology. As always for such forums, please use them respectfully and with consideration. We know you will, of course, but its just as well to be clear. We really don't want to have to intervene.

Start a new thread, respond to others, ask your fellow members for ideas, or share information that might be of interest. We hope that this will become a useful resource for members.

Enjoy!

The ESPLAT committee 🤓
